Over 100,000 chinook salmon return to Vancouver Island's Somass River every September. If you want to learn how to float fish for salmon, this is the place to do it. We spent a couple of days fishing with guides at @murphysportfishing, which offers multi-day guided trips and lodge accommodations. Check out what @LifeOfLindaLee caught near the end of the video! I remember growing up in the Okanagan (West Kelowna) and seeing my dad watching your videos, I haven't watched any of your videos for about 12 years until I was searching for Northern Pikeminnow content this morning and I stumbled upon your channel - the most ironic part is that I moved to the Cariboo (Williams Lake) two years ago and I have just started fishing again so it's really cool to see you fishing the local lakes! I love your content and the filming methods you use, you are by far my favorite fishing RUclipsr now!

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod 3 дня назад

      We don’t really have a surf perch community, not that I’m aware of anyway. Here in BC, if it isn’t salmon or steelhead, no one is really that interested which is unfortunate. I love how Washington and Oregon have much more diverse interests when it comes to target species.

    Great. video, Rod. One of my favorite fisheries here in Oregon! The entire 400 miles of the coast has lots of perch with very little competition. Here, the last 3 hours of incoming tide is usually the best time to fish. Were you using "Gulp bait"? My best bait is live sand shrimp. Mole crabs are also very good. One day a couple of years ago I was headed to the mouth of Elk River to fish for Sea-Run Cutthroat and decided to try my #3 Blue Fox spinner at the mouth of the river in the surf. Caught 25 Redtails as fast as I could cast out (all released). I've never been able to duplicate that. "Hooked on fishing" guy uses 4 inch plugs to catch Barred Surfperch near the SF Bay. Sorry to run on. The perch seem to like the white foamy surf areas, probably because the waves dislodge mole crabs. Also, the troughs are the best places to locate feeding perch.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod 14 дней назад

      Thanks Austin, are you going to hike Grizzly Lake? I've never done it but have friends who did it and had only good things to say about it. One friend did it in September and she said the Northern light show at night was amazing. I'm not totally sure how the grayling fishing is in September, but most likely it'll still be ok. The area where we fished is near the Northern boundary of Tombstone Territorial Park. Also, I'm not completely sure on the regulations, so you may want to check if it is fly fishing only or if you can use a spinning rod. If you can, then a tiny spoon or spinner (go with 1/16oz or 1/8oz if you can find some) should work quite well for them. Good luck!

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod 16 дней назад

      It doesn’t make sense for sure, but it’s just an old habit that I’ve had for forty years now so never bothered to change. 😆 These days I do use both right and left handed reels though. The only thing I’ve noticed is that when I use a left handed reel, my right hand ended up to be quite sore from gripping the rod all the time. On the other hand, when I use a right handed reel, I have a tendency to switch hands often to hold the rod.

    That river was sure full of salmon! Bobber and egg fishing has always been my favorite way to catch salmon, although I don't get to do that very often now. Our Coos Bay salmon are almost always "chromers"" since they are in salt water in the Bay and close to the ocean. However, the action is nothing like the fishing you just had. If you get one salmon in 5 hours of fishing that is a good day. Thanks for sharing.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod 16 дней назад

      Yeah they both can be fun for sure. 😄 For terminal fisheries like this one, lots of hook-ups like you mentioned but on some days you really have to pick and choose what to retain. We've also fished the Somass other years and I recall one year every single fish was chrome because river level was much higher, but fish were a lot more spread out.
